Air France is the French national airline, offering flights to destinations across the world.
If you plan to travel with Air France, it’s worthwhile to know their baggage allowance policies.
Understanding their baggage policy can help you avoid unnecessary stress and extra costs at the airport.
Checked baggage allowance
Air France allows passengers to bring one to three pieces of checked baggage on their flights, depending on the ticket class. For Economy and Premium Economy, the baggage should weigh no more than 23kg each. One piece per person travelling in Economy and two per person in Premium Economy. For travellers in Business Class and La Premiére, the baggage allowance is 32kg per bag. Two pieces per person in Business Class and three pieces each in La Premiére.
If your baggage exceeds the allowed weight, you will be charged an additional fee. Air France has a strict policy on checked baggage dimensions, which should not exceed 158 cm (62 in) in total dimensions (length + width + height).
If any piece of your checked baggage exceeds size or weight restrictions, you’ll be charged an added fee. The exact fee varies depending on the route you’re travelling on. You can purchase an Overweight Baggage Option at the airport in the baggage drop-off area. If your baggage weighs more than 32kg, you’ll need to contact Air France Cargo.
Cabin baggage allowance
Air France allows passengers in Economy and Premium Economy to bring one piece of cabin baggage and one personal item on their flights. The dimensions of cabin baggage must not exceed 55 cm x 35 cm x 25 cm (21.6 in x 13.7 in x 9.8 in) and weigh no more than 12kg. The personal item must not be bigger than 40 x 30 x 15 cm/15.7 x 11.8 x 5.8 in. It must fit under the seat in front of you.
For passengers travelling Business or La Premiére you can bring two pieces of cabin baggage and one personal item on the flight. Cabin baggage dimensions are the same as Economy Premium Economy but weight is a total of 18kg. Personal item restrictions are the same as in Economy and Premium Economy.
Travelling with sports equipment
Taking sports equipment on your trip? Your equipment should weigh no more than 23kg (or 32kg in the Business or La Première cabins) and its total dimensions 300 cm / 118 in or under. You may need prior approval, so make sure you notify Air France customer service 48 hours before your flight. If your sport equipment exceeds 300 cm / 118 in, you will need to contact Air France Cargo.
Travelling with musical instruments
Air France also has specific policies for musical instruments. Instruments can be checked as luggage as long as they do not exceed the size and weight limits: 158 cm in height + width + length, 23kg (Economy or Premium Economy cabin) or 32kg (Business or La Première cabin).
Musical instruments over 32kg in weight or 300 cm / 118 in long must be checked in the hold, with prior approval from Air France customer service. Again, you must submit a request at least 48 hours before your flight’s departure.
If your instrument is smaller than 115 cm / 45 in in size, height + length + width (guitar, violin, etc.): it’s a standard baggage item and can travel in the cabin. A musical instrument larger than 115 cm / 45 in in height, length, and width (and with 48 hour advance approval) may travel on a seat or seats, for which you must pay a fare. Your instrument must not weigh more than 45 kg.
In conclusion, Air France’s baggage policy is designed to provide clarity and convenience for all travellers, ensuring a smooth and efficient journey. Additionally, Air France’s transparent guidelines regarding excess baggage fees and options for pre-purchasing additional allowances help you plan your travel and avoid expensive surprises at the airport.
